The US Army Corps of Engineers’ hopper dredge Yaquina is now working the bar and entrance channel of the Siuslaw River. They are removing about 10-12,000 cubic yards of accumulated material each day and will be working until the evening of 23 August.

Shoaling develops over the course of each year and it is critical for public safety and safe navigation to maintain this Federally authorized channel through dredging. By taking out accumulated material in these areas, hazardous wave actions at the bar and entrance channel can be minimized. This dredging work ensures safety for everyone including the men and women of the US Coast Guard Siuslaw Station that are called upon to rescue mariners in distress.

Through annual maintenance of this channel, economic development in the area is both sustained and encouraged.

Annual funding for this vital operations and maintenance work is not a “given” and varies from year to year. The Port of Siuslaw is very grateful for the support we receive from our Federal representatives (US Senator Ron Wyden, US Senator Jeff Merkley and US Congressman Peter DeFazio) as well as the US Army Corps of Engineers.

The Port of Siuslaw’s Turning Basin (the area from the Highway 101 bridge to the boat launch ramp) was dredged by a clamshell dredge these past few weeks. Over 97,000 cubic yards of material were dredged from the Turning Basin and placed in an EPA approved offshore site. Over $1.4 million worth of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money funded this infrastructure maintenance project.

While some dredging work was done in 1981 and in 1995, the last significant dredging was conducted in June 1974. Years of accumulated sediment that left some areas of the Turning Basin at as little as nine feet are now near the authorized depth of 16 feet.

The Port wishes to thank US Senator Ron Wyden, US Senator Jeff Merkley, US Congressman Peter DeFazio, their respective staffs, the US Army Corps of Engineers and the Dutra Corporation for funding and conducting this work. The Port had long sought to have this work conducted to ensure safe navigation, public safety and promote economic development goals.
