New Marine Board Laws for 2010
March 1st, 2010

During the 20009 Oregon Legislative session a new law was passed calling for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon State Marine Board to develop a new program. It’s called the Aquatic Invasive Species Prevention Program and it has conservation and protection of Oregon water-bodies as its #1 goal. By preventing the spread of invasive species, we are protecting Oregon’s waterways from the most significant environmental threat of the day. The program applies not only to the Quagga and Zebra Mussels plus New Zealand mud snails and other key aquatic invasive species that are spread by recreational water-based activity.

Another new law that came out of the 2009 legislature will make it illegal to launch your boat into Oregon waters with any visible aquatic species on its exterior hull or attached to any part of the motor or boat trailer. In addition no boat is to launch with any aquatic species in its bilge, live-well, motor-well or other interior location. This will make it very easy for law enforcement officers to enforce the regulation at boat ramps as it will require all boats to be visible clean when launching. If we all do our part to protect Oregon water-bodies we can enjoy many years  of a healthy ecosystems.
