Rate Increase Discussion at April 15 Meeting

At the Port Commission meeting in January, the Board agreed to proposals to restructure Commercial Moorage rates, a proposed rate increase for West Marina Recreational Moorage, and a restructure and rate increase for East Marina Recreational rates.  At the February meeting, the Board was presented with a proposed rate increase for Campground fees.

At the March 18th meeting, the Port Commission was presented with a Resolution to adopt the new rates.  After hearing public comment and having further discussion, the Board requested staff to bring rate comparisons and “thought process” behind the amounts being proposed to the April 15 meeting.

Bulkhead Repair Conceptual Plans

Bulkhead Repair Conceptual Plans

Port of Siuslaw Manager, Robert Forsythe, received conceptual plans and technical drawings today for the much needed repairs to the Siuslaw River bulkhead.   ZCS Engineering, Inc. was awarded the contract to prepare the preliminary designs for the Port; a survey and geotechnical study were completed as part of the design preparation.  This project was funded in part with Oregon State Lottery Funds administered by the Oregon Infrastructure Finance Authority, in the form of a $9,600 grant from the State of Oregon’s Port Planning and Marketing Fund.  The Port provided $3,200 in matching funds to complete the drawings. “We are very pleased to receive these conceptual plans because they are the first step in completing repairs to the failing bulkhead,” Forsythe said. “With these preliminary designs the Port has a basic map of how to proceed, as well as information needed to begin applying for the state and federal permits that will be required for the project.” Repair of the riverfront bulkhead is listed as a critical issue in the Port’s 2013-18 Strategic Business Plan. The Siuslaw River bulkhead is an essential piece of marine infrastructure which protects a large portion of the Port’s waterfront properties, including the RV Campground, district office, recreational marina, boat launch, marine fueling station, and parking lot.  ZCS engineers evaluated multiple repair options and are recommending a sheet pile wall with helical anchor tiebacks.  This method is preferred because of its minimal impact on the estuary and surrounding upland structures, and its 30-50 year projected service life. Copies of the conceptual plans can be viewed at the Port office, 100 Harbor Street, Florence or click here.  The Port welcomes comments from the public regarding the project.  Comments can be directed to the Port office at 541-997-3426 or emailed to port@portofsiuslaw.com.

Port Negotiates with Fish Buyer

Gunther “Smokey” Mothes is interested in setting up a Seafood Facility in Florence.  Smokey would purchase fresh caught seafood from local commercial fishermen.  The business would specialize in smoked and canned Albacore Tuna, Chinook Salmon, and Dungeness Crab.  Smokey was in Florence December 17-20 to meet with Port Manager Robert Forsythe and various community members to discuss his future plans.  For more information on Smokey’s Custom Seafood click here.
